Obama Insists that All Employers Contribute to Health Coverage

Obama says all employers should contribute to health coverage for their employees or pay towards a public plan. It is an interesting concept, although many employers are actively preparing to reduce the costs of health coverage, not increase it. They just cannot afford to keep offering it at the rates they pay now.

The President suggests hospitals need to be graded on performance and streamline their recordkeeping for higher efficiency. Better recordkeeping is nice, but it does not address the prices doctors charge for services or what the hospital bills for patient care. We know these type of bills can be shockingly high.

In addition, Obama says a national health insurance exchange program would reform private markets. It sure would – it would drive up the prices insurance companies charge because they need to keep their bottom line healthy. Insurance companies are in business to make money, not shell it out.

Obama Still Says Health Reform Should be Affordable

Obama says it is a priority to have affordable, accessible, high-quality health care. Well that is nice, but doesn’t everyone? And how can that be accomplished? Who would pay for it? And how long would those changes take?

The President suggests mandating that all children have health coverage. Ask yourself about the costs involved for those who do not have insurance now. And if you mandate children, do you mandate adults? How do you enforce this? Of course, we all know that we are supposed to have mandated health insurance by 2014, but the question is, aside from stiff fines how do you enforce it? How do you enforce a homeless person with no money, but panhandling, to get health insurance? Who pays for that? We the taxpayers do, that’s who.

Health Insurance Really is Affordable

Yes, it is true, health insurance is affordable. Or rather, look at it this way – if you do not have health insurance and something bad happens, then how will you pay your medical bills? If you have no money in the bank, and most Americans are in that spot right now, you could get financially drained when you get a bill for a broken leg.
On the other hand, if you had health insurance for those “uh-oh” moments, then you would not possibly face bankruptcy. Sure, you could argue that if you have no money in the bank and can barely feed your family, that you cannot afford health insurance. But, honestly, do yourself a favor and find the few extra dollars a month to get a policy. You cannot afford to do nothing, particularly if you have kids.

Health Insurance can be Reduced by Lowering Drug Costs

One way to lower drug costs is to import prescription drugs. The big drug manufacturers will have a fit about that, but your budget might like it. Can it be done? Well, as far as a good idea goes, it is a good one but no one is certain if it could really be done. But what can be done is buying your drugs online from another country and saving big dollars. For instance, buying drugs from Canada is way cheaper than buying drugs in the U.S.

Of course, these are minor issues when it comes to the whole system. Frankly, health reform may change how Americans buy their drugs and may change how big pharma prices them. We can all hope anyhow. Generally speaking, people are still in the process of trying to keep up with the ever-increasing cost of medical care and wondering what will stop it from escalating even further by the time 2014 hits. Then what will we do?

Health Reform – a Hit or Miss?

It depends what side of the health reform debate you are on as to whether or not you think health reform is a good or bad thing. From a purely objective point of view, ensuring that all Americans have access to health care is a laudable goal. It is how we get to that position that is causing problems. Along the way someone will suffer when health reform gets going full swing. That is just the way the system works – rob Peter to pay Paul.

This raises the old rumors, which maybe are not so old, that seniors will be the ones to lose the most when health reform really kicks in. But what about the physically and mentally disabled? Has anyone wondered how their health care needs will be addressed in a new system? Has anyone stopped to wonder who will pay for the homeless who will be mandated to have health insurance come 2014? If you said the taxpayers, you would be right. So really, how does that system differ from social medicine in say, Canada? Just food for thought.

Why Choose Co-Pay Plans When Something Else May Work Better?

People really hate the unknown. The fear of trying something different after being used to something they liked. Co-pay benefits are like that. If you worked for a company that offered co-pay, you got used to seeing the doctor and having the tab picked up by the company. You might even have had some of the diagnostics picked up as well.

If you quit the company and go out on your own, and still want a co-pay arrangement, you are going to get the shock of your life. They are very high end expensive, and the premiums are prohibitive for a solo person. They are usually something larger companies and corporations choose to have on hand as a perk for their workers.

Although it is a shock trying to adjust from a co-pay arrangement to one where you are paying the bills, it can be done with grace and not a lot of cash either. You just have to be smart and shop around to see what kind of deals you can get to suit your circumstances and budget.

Is There Good Value in Co-Pays?

This is another interesting question, and it all depends on your point of view as to whether or not you are getting good value for your money. Look at it this way. Picture an expensive restaurant with an a la carte menu. Most of them do not tell you how much the dish you ordered is going to cost you when all is said and done. However, no matter what you do order and consume, you have to pay for it. Well, It is the same thing with co-pays. A co-pay plan may pay about $40 for a $50 benefit.

If you’re hooked on co-pay because you think you are getting value for your dollar, you might want to take another look at that assumption. The co-pay really only covers the doctors office visit. If you go any place else for tests, you pay the freight. It is extra. Sad but true, many people have no idea how much the real cost of service is when they visit the doctor.

Co-Pay Only Covers the Visit to the Doctor

You might not know this, so here is the scoop. Co-pay coverage only pays for the visit to the doctor – period. It does NOT pay for lab tests and other things ordered. Those are separate, and those add up quickly. So be prepared.

This is one of those situations where you really need to know what your co-pay plan actually offers, not find out later. It is a funny thing, really, that a lot of people feel they pay less at the doctor’s office when they have co-pay coverage. That’s not the truth.

For instance, co-pay only pays about $30 for a $40 benefit. It is a small benefit, and not really worth it! Know what your co-pay plan really does cover and how much. This will save you some nasty surprises later.

Health Care Costs Are What?

You might not want to know this type of information, but actually it is vital that you do if you are to understand the pickle the health care system is in today. Let’s take the example of a broken leg. The price tag for that misadventure is over $20,000.00 – you read that right, over twenty thousand dollars. And that is just for a non-complicated fracture. If there is anything else that needs to be done – listen to the ka-ching!

If you have health insurance this is a bonus, if you do not, guess who pays the bill. Right – you do. How many Americans in this day an age have $20,000.00 on hand to pay that kind of bill? Not many. This is precisely what insurance is for – the major catastrophic events in your life, not the sniffles and fever.

Get wise to how much you pay for services when you demand health care, and you will start to see just how much sense it actually makes to be insured and not take the chance.
