Anthem: A Guide to Medicare’s Supplemental Insurance Plans

Anthem MedicareAnthem’s Medicare supplement plans offer you multiple options. Supplemental insurance steps in to fill the gaps you may have in your insurance coverage. Original Medicare coverage does not pay for everything (nor was it designed to do so). It handles hospital care and hospital deductibles well, but to ensure you are covered for any eventuality, it makes good sense to explore your options, comparing rates and overall coverage as you go.

Medicare supplement plans are intended to complement your regular Medicare coverage. They provide assistance for co-insurance, co-payment and deductible costs. An Anthem Medicare supplemental plan may be perfect for a patient who wishes to remain with a certain doctor, use known and trusted hospital facilities, and choose specialists independently. Each plan has a monthly premium and some out-of-pocket expenses that relate to the type of plan chosen.

If you are 65 years of age (or younger, if you are disabled or suffer from end-stage renal disease), if you are already enrolled in Parts A and B and if you live in the state in which you apply for Medicare, you are eligible for Medicare supplement plans. Plans do vary between states, so it is best to check your eligibility before applying. Choose the best rate for your circumstances by comparing rates and coverage.

Plan A provides basic supplemental coverage for Part A hospital co-payments from day 61 through day 150, along with 20 percent of Part B services not covered by Medicare.

Plan B offers the same coverage as Plan A, but also covers Part A hospital deductibles during each benefit period (up to six times a year).

Plan C has the same benefits as Plan B, and covers your annual Medicare Part B deductible completely. It also offers benefits to pay for skilled nursing care in a facility and for medical emergencies for U.S. travellers internationally.

Plan D is similar to Plan B, but covers skilled nursing care in a facility and up to $1,600 annually for home health care benefits. This plan also covers emergency care outside of the country.

Plan F has the same benefits as Plan C, but also covers Medicare Part B charges for bills over Medicare’s approved limits.

High Deductible Plan F is the same as Plan F, but the premiums are lower. In exchange, you must pay a higher deducible each calendar year before your insurance coverage will apply.

Plan J offers all the benefits of Plans C, D, F and High Deductible F. In addition, Plan J will pay for preventive care services that Medicare does not cover.
