Georgia

Georgia MedicareDepending on where you live in Georgia, you may be expected to live longer than others. However, if you have access to Medicare/Medigap and the right kind of health insurance package for your needs, you can be confident that your health will remain good with proper care — no matter what part of Georgia you call home.

According to recent statistics, those who live in Fayette County live longer than those in any other part of Georgia, topping all 159 counties. In Fayette, the mean life expectancy is 78.9 years. The Healthcare Georgia Foundation (HGF) backed a study that revealed that Fayette County outpaced not just state statistics, but also the national average in 13 out of 14 categories (or measures of health).

Each county was ranked for a total of 15 measures. The measures used in the study were categorized as Health Outcomes, Social Determinants or Health Indicators. For example, when assessing Social Determinants, scientists checked the percentage of the population that matriculated out of high school and/or graduated from college, the crime rate and the poverty and unemployment levels.

The study examined the number of obese residents, teen birth rates, the number of patients per doctor, low birth weights and the percentage of sexually transmitted diseases as Health Indicators. These Health Indicators were further linked to Health Outcomes, which studied the average life expectancy, the number of individuals who spent time in hospital as a result of an asthma attack, the number of diagnosed diabetics, cancer rates, the number of deaths due to cancer and number of deaths due to heart disease.

After analysis, researchers had a sharp picture of the stronger and weaker Georgian counties. Then, each county’s numbers were compared to the Georgia and to the U.S. averages. All statistics indicated that seniors living in Georgia see room for improvement in many areas of care, but that with access to Medicare/Medigap, residents can certainly beat the statistical odds in any given county.

Under the Social Determinants category, Fayette had the highest population of graduates with diplomas from high school or higher, the smallest number of individuals living below poverty level, the 44th highest crime rate and the 16th for unemployment. Health Indicators revealed that Fayette placed 5th for the percentage of obese individuals, 29th for prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), 4th for low birth weights, 24th for the percentage of uninsured, 28th for the number of people served by one doctor and first for teen birth rates. Finally, in Health Outcomes, Fayette led life expectancy and placed 63rd for diagnosed diabetics, 17th for individuals spending time in hospital for asthma, 3rd for prevalence of deaths due to heart disease and 18th for deaths due to cancer. Overall, those who lived in Fayette did much better in all numbered categories, with the single exception of the number of doctors available to serve patients.

Public health indicates a state’s current economical and medical success. Older Americans with Medicare/Medigap policies stand a much better chance of maintaining their health than those who do not have such coverage. Certainly Georgia has much to improve, but it is obvious that Fayette County is doing something right.
